About HPMC

Hypromellose (HPMC) is a white odorless powder. It is non-ionic cellulose ether.

HPMC is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as an additive, and is included in pharmacopoeia monographs of many countries. HPMC is approved by the FDA & EFSA as food additive for direct or indirect applications. HPMC is listed in GRAS notice GRN 000213. WHO’s JECFA database has no limits on the amount of HPMC intake.

HPMC can be made from various fibers, such as wood pulp, cotton and corn fibers.
